“Helping young people learn” is the vital work of the Leicestershire Dyslexic Association.
St Mary’s Freemasons Lodge in Melton Mowbray has provided £500 for computer equipment for the Saturday workshops for dyslexic children held at Stoneygate Church Hall. There is no current specialist provision in Melton Mowbray and even at Stoneygate there is a desperate need for new teachers.
Dyslexia is a huge and growing problem in education and, as it is not related to intelligence, holds back many able children unfairly. The Leicester Dyslexic Association (LDA) provides teaching in English and computer science to children aged between 7 and 16 years to supplement and help with regular schooling.
The condition fully affects around 5% of the population but up to 20% may have some symptoms. Well known for writing and reading problems, it is also associated with auditory processing, balance and motor control difficulties. In addition, about a fifth of dyslexics also have ADHD and about a third of those diagnosed with ADHD have dyslexia.
