John’s Lee Wood Scout Campsite, a 33-acre woodland retreat set in the heart of the National Forest and owned by the City of Leicester Scout Districts, has received a significant funding boost thanks to Leicestershire & Rutland Freemasons.

The organisation has donated £2,500 towards upgrading essential kitchen equipment so that the site can meet the latest legislation and safety requirements. The improvements will support the thousands of young people who use the campsite every year for outdoor education, adventure, and skills development.

A Site Rich in History

John’s Lee Wood has served generations of Scouts since it was purchased in 1946 for £1,375. After a year of intensive volunteer work, the site opened to campers in September 1947. From its early days, the campsite has expanded steadily, gaining a variety of buildings over the decades. The Collier Hut and the Dick & Phil Cabin were the first structures on the site, later joined by the Harry Walker and Alan Gutteridge cabins.

More recent additions include modern facilities such as the toilet block, on-site shop known as “The Providor,” and the Ray Siggers Cabin, now home to the site wardens. Despite its growth, John’s Lee Wood still retains much of its original character and woodland charm.

Ongoing Improvements for Future Generations

The donation comes at a time when the campsite is undergoing a wider programme of development. This includes a project to remove dead and diseased trees and to establish new tree nurseries, creating additional open areas for activities and environmental education.

The upgrade of kitchen facilities will ensure John’s Lee Wood continues to provide a safe and sustainable space for young people to experience camping, community, and outdoor adventure.

Looking Ahead

Site leaders say the ongoing improvements reflect a long-standing commitment to keeping the campsite relevant, safe, and inspiring for future generations.

With its blend of history, nature, and continued investment, John’s Lee Wood remains a treasured resource for Scouting in Leicestershire and beyond.
