Federation of School Lodges Hosted by Old Oakhamian Lodge No.8033

The Old Oakhamian Lodge No. 8033 proudly welcomed brethren from across the country on Saturday 15th August 2026, as Oakham School hosted this year’s meeting of the Federation of School Lodges. The gathering brought together members from school‑linked Lodges nationwide for a day celebrating friendship, heritage, and the enduring traditions of academically connected Freemasonry.

The Lodge was honoured by the attendance of Assistant Grand Master Stephen Varley and Past Assistant Grand Master Sir David Hugh Wootton, accompanied by a distinguished assembly of senior Freemasons. Their presence added considerable prestige to an already significant occasion for both the Lodge and the Province.

A Warm Welcome and a Historic Setting

The meeting opened in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, where visitors were greeted by the Lodge Master, Jack Soars, and members of the Old Oakhamian Lodge. Attendees enjoyed two well‑received presentations:

Aurore Guillimot‑Bonneford, School Archivist, offered a fascinating insight into Oakham School’s 442‑year history.
Peter Hems delivered an engaging overview of the History of Masonry in Rutland, highlighting the deep connections between the Province and its educational institutions.

Showcasing Lodge Heritage and Achievement

Throughout the day, guests experienced the exceptional hospitality for which the Old Oakhamian Lodge is known. A highlight was the display of the Lodge’s Challenge 60 initiative, featuring summonses from visits to sixty new Lodges and Chapters undertaken between the 2025 and 2026 Installations. Exhibited in the Small Barraclough Dining Hall, the collection drew considerable interest and sparked lively conversation among visitors.

Complementing the Challenge 60 display were archival photographs of Lodge members during their time at Oakham School, a nostalgic and much‑admired addition that reinforced the Lodge’s strong connection to its alma mater.

A Memorable Festive Board

The day concluded with a well‑attended festive board, where brethren, partners, and guests from many school‑linked Lodges shared stories, strengthened friendships, and celebrated the values that unite the Federation. The atmosphere was warm, inclusive, and reflective of the spirit of cooperation that defines the organisation.

During the evening, the Lodge presented a £500 cheque to Mrs Samantha Rowntree, Director of Development and Engagement at Oakham School. The donation will fund a new bench for the sports field, a lasting contribution to the school community.

The Province of Leicestershire & Rutland extends its sincere thanks to the Old Oakhamian Lodge for delivering a well‑organised, welcoming, and thoroughly enjoyable event. The Federation of School Lodges also expressed its appreciation for the superb venue, excellent hospitality, and the strong sense of fellowship that characterised the day.
