On Monday 1st December, Freemasons’ Hall in Leicester hosted a special occasion as Raj Solanki was installed as Master of the Jason Lodge of Cycling No.7716. Raj is a passionate cyclist, well known for completing the 300-mile Tercentenary ride and many other cycling challenges. The installation ceremony was conducted by Simon Oldfield, himself an enthusiastic cyclist.
Leicester has long been associated with cycling. The city was the birthplace of Halfords, one of the world’s most iconic bicycle brands, which began on Halford Street (opposite the previous Freemasons' Hall) in 1902. Leicester also hosted the 1970 UCI Road and Track World Championships, attracting global cycling legends to Mallory Park and Saffron Lane Velodrome. Local riders such as Fred Wood, a world champion penny-farthing racer, helped put Leicester on the cycling map.
Freemasonry and cycling share values of brotherhood, perseverance, and balance. Historically, cycling clubs and Lodges have often overlapped, with examples like the Brixton Ramblers Lodge, founded by cyclists in 1909. Today, specialist Lodges such as the Lodge of Cycling continue this tradition, combining fellowship with a shared passion for the sport. Members regularly organise charity rides and sportives, raising funds for good causes while enjoying the camaraderie of the road.
Looking ahead, Raj is planning an exciting sportive in Leicester during his year as Master, an event that promises to celebrate both cycling and Freemasonry.
