A long-held wish of one of Devonshire Court’s Resident Ladies became a reality this autumn, thanks to the dedication and perseverance of Tony Ridewood and the support of the Friends of Devonshire Court.
Several years ago, during a casual conversation, a Resident mentioned to Centre Almoner, Tony Ridewood, that what she missed most about being actively involved in Freemasonry was dressing up and attending a traditional Ladies Festival. The comment struck a chord, and Tony was determined to make it happen.
After careful planning and fundraising discussions, the Friends of Devonshire Court agreed to sponsor the event. And so, on October 18th, the long-awaited Devonshire Court Ladies Festival came to life.
A total of 44 visitors and 17 Residents gathered for a splendid black-tie luncheon at the Home. The festivities began with a welcoming glass of “bubbles” and a selection of canapés, all accompanied by delightful piano music performed by a local Freemason.
Guests then enjoyed a beautifully prepared three-course meal, expertly cooked by the Home’s catering team, Cater-plus. True to tradition, each lady received a special gift—a folding fan and matching sleeve—as a memento of the day. Wine for the lunch was generously provided by donations from local Freemasons, and a local member gave a fine rendition of the traditional Ladies Song, much to everyone’s delight.
After the meal, guests and residents moved to the main lounge for coffee, tea, and after-dinner drinks accompanied by chocolate mints. Entertainment was provided by a professional singer, whose repertoire had both residents and guests tapping their feet and joining in.
A raffle held during the afternoon, along with generous donations, raised £400 for the Friends of Devonshire Court fund—ensuring the event’s self-sufficiency and supporting future activities for residents.
The Trustees of the Friends extended their heartfelt thanks to the Home’s staff for their invaluable help before and during the event, to the local Freemasons and their partners for their support, and to the Caterers for their exceptional service.
Originally intended as a one-off celebration, the overwhelming enthusiasm and gratitude expressed by guests and residents alike may have changed that. It seems WBro Tony Ridewood and WBro Geoff Searson, Chair of the Friends, might soon find themselves planning another Ladies Festival—albeit with a few more grey hairs to show for it!
A truly special day at Devonshire Court—filled with music, laughter, friendship, and fond memories.
