The Masonic Fishing Charity (MTSFC) exists to “bring an interactive fishing and countryside experience to people with special needs.” It achieves this by organising both coarse and fly‑fishing events at fisheries across the country, inviting participants from special needs schools, specialist centres, and individuals who have experienced trauma. These days offer a unique opportunity for fun, confidence‑building, and meaningful connection with nature.
Following the unfortunate passing of the local branch organiser, David Thelwell, the local branch of the MTSFC proudly held its first Children’s Day at the Mill on the Soar Fishery, generously sponsored by fishery owner Rob Scotting.
Ten pupils from Dorothy Goodman Special Needs School attended, supported by ten enthusiastic Masonic Casters. The pupils enjoyed a fantastic day’s fishing, with plenty of fish caught throughout the session. One particularly memorable moment came when Paul Prendergast was snapped off by a powerful double‑figure carp, much to the excitement of everyone watching.
After the morning’s fishing, the group enjoyed lunch at the adjacent pub, where Tim Dixon presented medals and certificates to the pupils in recognition of their achievements. The purpose of the MTSFC is simple: to bring smiles, laughter, and unforgettable experiences to the participants, and just as importantly, to the volunteer Casters who support them.
Special thanks go to everyone who contributed to making the day such a success, especially our volunteer First Aider, Xenia Kent.
The next event will take place on 9th September, and the branch looks forward to welcoming another group of young people for a day of joy and discovery.
