John Backhouse, Charity Steward at Ferrers & Ivanhoe Lodge No. 779, was instrumental in securing funds for a very worthwhile community project that is now bringing joy directly to local residents.
Ashby de la Zouch Museum, operated entirely by volunteers and registered as a charity, installed a touchscreen two years ago in their Zouche Gallery. The display proved so popular with visitors that the museum trustees decided to raise funds for a standalone version that could be loaned to care homes, schools, and other local institutions.
Thanks to support from Freemasons and other donors, this ambitious vision has become reality. On Monday, the museum trustees achieved a significant milestone by loaning out their new interactive touchscreen for the first time to BUPA's Ashby Court Care Home, where it was met with considerable excitement.
The portable touchscreen features short videos about Ashby Castle, St Helen's Church, the town's history, and local motte and bailey castles. It also includes 50 articles covering local events, notable personalities, and places of interest, along with audio recordings of traditional local songs. The museum trustees plan to add additional content in the future.
After a live demonstration at Ashby Court, Sally Shorthouse (Administrator) and Shinnette Davis (Activities Coordinator) shared their enthusiasm: "This will be such a wonderful addition for our residents—it's engaging, easy to use, and perfect for both group activities and quiet moments in their rooms."
The device can be viewed in residents' communal lounges and can also be transported to the rooms of bedridden residents. The touchscreen will remain at Ashby Court for two months, bringing local history and cherished memories directly to residents' fingertips, before moving to Fernleigh Care Home.
Kenneth Hillier, a member of Ferrers and Ivanhoe Lodge and vice-chairman of Ashby Museum trustees, expressed his delight with the Masonic support. He noted that the project fulfills both institutions' raison d'être—supporting the wider community, particularly those with special needs. He is very grateful to John for his invaluable support in making this community connection possible.
