In a unique event that combined history, tradition, and community engagement, Grace Dieu Lodge No. 2428, based in the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland, recently opened its doors to a local U3A (University of the Third Age) group eager to learn more about the often-misunderstood world of Freemasonry.

The visit was thoughtfully arranged to give the U3A members — many of whom are retired and enjoy lifelong learning through shared interests — an authentic insight into Freemasonry’s practices, symbolism, and community work. The event was hosted by lodge members Paul Dixon, with engaging presentations delivered by other lodge members Paul Beachell, Paul Hart, and Robert Cartwright. Their talks provided a broad overview of Freemasonry, touching on its historical roots, charitable aims, and the local story of Grace Dieu Lodge.

Following the presentations, the group was invited into the lodge room — a moment many had been especially looking forward to. Russ Hemstock, Paul Hart, and Mark Cartwright guided the visitors through the space, offering explanations on the layout of the room, the significance of the various roles within the Lodge, and the historical and symbolic furniture that had been referenced earlier. The tour proved to be a highlight of the visit, sparking plenty of thoughtful questions from the curious audience.

After the lodge room tour, the group gathered in a more informal setting downstairs for tea, coffee, and biscuits, generously served by Dianne Dixon and Lynn Hart. This relaxed conclusion to the visit allowed U3A members and Freemasons to chat one-on-one, fostering open dialogue and deeper understanding.

In a generous gesture, the 28 U3A visitors donated a total of £108.00 to the Lodge’s charity fund — a testament to their appreciation of the welcome they received and the value they placed on the experience.

The visit was widely seen as a great success by both the lodge members and the U3A attendees. It not only strengthened ties between Freemasonry and the local community but also showcased the openness and hospitality at the heart of Grace Dieu Lodge.

As Freemasonry continues to evolve in the 21st century, events like this remind us that openness, education, and fellowship remain at its core.
