Finding Her Own Place in the Masonic Family: Reina’s Story

When Dave Shoobridge first became involved in Freemasonry, his wife, Reina, was supportive of his journey, but she did not expect to find a place for herself within the wider Masonic community. At first, Reina had no particular interest in joining any associated groups and assumed that Freemasonry would be something she encouraged from the outside, rather than something in which she would become personally involved.

That changed when she was introduced to the Leicestershire and Rutland Widow’s Sons, a Masonic motorcycling group made up of Freemasons and supporters.

Although Reina does not ride a motorcycle herself, she has always loved motorcycling and is an enthusiastic pillion rider. The Widow’s Sons immediately appealed to her because it brought together friendship, social activity, charitable work and a shared passion for motorbikes. What began as an interest soon developed into a genuine sense of belonging.

Through the Leicestershire and Rutland Widow’s Sons, Reina has found friendship, companionship and a strong sense of friendship, support and belonging. She has enjoyed attending events, supporting social gatherings and becoming involved in fundraising activities. Her enthusiasm, warmth and natural ability to make people feel welcome have also led her to become an Acorn - new members of the group, known within the Widow’s Sons as Acorns - and then an Acorn representative helping to mentor and support some of the groups Acorns, who are new or joining members.

Dave has now been a Freemason for three years, and throughout that time Reina has been an active and encouraging presence alongside him. She has supported and hosted Widow’s Sons events and has played an important role in helping others feel included. Her involvement has shown that the wider Masonic family is not limited only to those who are members of Lodges, but also includes the wives, partners, families and friends who support and strengthen the community.

Last year, Reina also joined the Twigs, the ladies’ group associated with Wycliffe Lodge No. 3078. Like many people joining something new, she was initially apprehensive, but she quickly found the group to be welcoming, friendly and supportive. Through the Twigs, Reina has formed new friendships with other wives and ladies connected to the lodge, further deepening her connection with the wider Masonic community.

Wanting to bring people together, Reina organised a ladies-only evening for members of the Twigs and the ladies of the Widow’s Sons. The evening created an opportunity for friendship, laughter and shared experiences, helping to build links between two important parts of the wider Masonic family. It was a simple but meaningful example of how fellowship can grow when people are given the chance to meet, talk and support one another.

Reina commented that she "really enjoy being part of the Leicestershire and Rutland Widow's Sons and these events help bring people together and make a difference."

Reina and Dave Shoobridge were the genial hosts for the evening, with Dave making sure everyone got what they wanted to drink!

Reina was surprised and delighted by how much money was raised. The generosity and support shown made her feel quite humbled. The final total raised was £550 for Epilepsy Action UK who offer support sessions in Leicestershire.

Reina has already committed to hosting another Widow’s Sons event later in 2026; the Christmas Presence. This gathering will once again bring people together in the spirit of friendship, generosity and charitable support.

While she would have been happy to raise money for any worthy cause, Epilepsy Action UK holds particular significance for Reina and Dave. Epilepsy has affected their own family, the family of a close friend and the family of one of their Lodge members. As a result, the charity’s work feels especially personal and meaningful to the couple. Supporting Epilepsy Action UK has given Reina the opportunity to help raise awareness and contribute to a cause that touches many lives.

From her perspective as a Masonic wife, Reina believes Freemasonry brings people together, supports charities and helps strengthen local communities. Her involvement with the Leicestershire and Rutland Widow’s Sons and the Twigs has allowed her to feel included, valued and connected to Freemasonry in her own right. What began as support for Dave’s Masonic journey has become a journey of her own.

Reina’s story is a reminder that Freemasonry’s impact extends beyond the Lodge room. It reaches families, friendships, charities and communities. Through her kindness, energy and commitment, Reina has shown that being part of the wider Masonic family can be meaningful, rewarding and full of purpose.
