Freemasonry’s commitment to supporting local communities was recently demonstrated by St Mary’s Freemasons’ Lodge No. 7164, which has made a £500 donation to Melton Mowbray Swimming Club, helping the club move closer to an important equipment goal.

The swimming club, based at the town’s Waterfield Leisure Centre, is raising £2,500 to purchase five specialist backstroke start ledges—equipment that plays a vital role in modern competitive swimming. The cheque was presented by David Alcraft, Charity Steward of St Mary’s Lodge, to club representatives Tracie McGhie, Emma Redwood, and Liz Rawson.

Speaking on behalf of the club, Chair Emma Redwood expressed her gratitude for the Lodge’s support.“The donation will enable our swimmers to practise and perfect their backstroke starts,” she said. “This new equipment will be a huge benefit to swimmers across all age groups and will help us continue to compete successfully at local, county, regional and national level.”

She added that, combined with funds raised at the club’s recent fun gala, the Lodge’s generosity has already made a tangible impact. “With this donation, we have been able to purchase two backstroke start ledges and are excitedly awaiting their arrival. We will continue our fundraising efforts to reach our overall goal.”

Melton Mowbray Swimming Club is a volunteer-led organisation with a proud and inclusive ethos. Its members range in age from just seven through to 80, with younger swimmers taking part in the Diddy Leagues and older members competing in Masters events. The club is currently active in the County Age Group Championships, representing the town with distinction.

The Lodge’s support reflects Freemasonry’s long-standing principle of charitable giving— quietly making a difference where it matters most, while helping local organisations thrive.

Those wishing to support the swimming club’s fundraising efforts can pledge via its Crowdfunder page, and businesses interested in sponsorship opportunities are invited to contact the club directly for further details.
